SCANDINAVIAN TOBACCO
Scandinavian Tobacco Group Eersel was established as Henri Wintermans Cigars in 1904, when the two brothers Sjaak and Henri established a cigar production in the Dutch town of Duizel.
After 30 years the brothers had captured a large share of the domestic market, but in 1934 they amicably parted ways. Henri hired his son, Adriaan, and moved to Eersel, where the factories have been located to this day. The Henri Wintermans Sigarenfabriek concentrated on exports to new markets.
Henri Wintermans was truly a man of the world. He travelled a great deal and brought together flavors from Brazil, Cuba and Indonesia.
In 1948 Australia became one of the company’s first export countries, later to be followed by the United Kingdom and France. In 1966 Henri Wintermans Cigars was taken over by British American Tobacco. A few years later, in 1970, the company took over the Belgian Velasques Cigar Company. In 1996 Henri Wintermans Cigars was acquired by Scandinavian Tobacco Group.
Velasques is an unique machine produced cigar which is very popular in the Dutch Caribbean. The cigar is named after the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. The Velasques cigar is deeply rooted in the culture of the Dutch Caribbean islands and always around when people come together at important moments and occasions.
